Washington Interfaith Network (WIN)

National City Christian Church is active in the Washington Interfaith Network (WIN), a city-wide, multi-racial, interfaith, non-partisan citizen's organization.  WIN is made up of more than 50 churches along with unions, the public schools, and community-based organizations.  We have been working along with our WIN partners on the following programs:

  • Get-out-the-Vote Campaigns.  Through constant advocacy and voter registration drives, Excellence in Education.  In its latest efforts, WIN has advocated for mayoral control and accountability for the schools, for a new chancellor and facilities chief, and for $21.5 million for the Athletic Fields Renovation, which was completed last year.
  • Neighborhoods First.  WIN has influenced the mayor and city council to spend $1.1 billion for the people in the neighborhoods of Washington, DC.  These funds will go for recreation centers, job training centers, and a new Neighborhood Investment Fund (NF) for land acquisition and predevelopment for affordable and supportive housing, and more.
  • Nehemiah Homes.  WIN has built a number units of affordable housing, called Nehemiah Homes.  We are supporting construction of hundreds more units of Nehemiah housing, and requirement that 30% of housing built on all city-owned property be affordable housing.
  • Housing First:  Building 2,500 units of permanent supportive housing for the homeless or for those in danger of becoming homeless--starting with getting 350 people off the street and into housing this year.  Working with the Mayor and City Council to get a detailed budget plan and then break ground to make this happen.
  • Fighting to preserve 5,000 rental units and pursuing passage of a law giving the DC government the Right of First Refusal to Purchase when buildings are sold as well as a pro-active strategy to preserve HUD subsidized housing.

WIN has been amazingly successful this past year, but much work remains to be done to hold city officials accountable for their promises.

National City urgently needs more members who are DC residents to become actively involved in WIN!  Please contact Rick Bahr (richardbahr@verizon.net) or Will Lang (wlang@comcast.net) if you would be willing to join in this important advocacy.  Training is offered.
