Holy Week Devotion – The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus
… but Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” Luke 22:48
Throughout the Bible we are reminded of human fallibility. This is certainly the worst of it.
God continues throughout the Bible to use human beings to bring his messages and will to us. Despite this fallibility, God continues to use us to bring His will here on earth.
As Christians we struggle to do the right thing. In my old age I hear the explanation that Judas probably thought he was doing the right thing. Jesus would declare himself to the rulers as the Son of God, he would be protected by God, and he would be recognized by all people as to who he was. Of course, I don’t know that, but as a disciple I would hope that Judas at least thought he was helping to promote Jesus to the people, despite the disastrous result to both of them.
We have to be constantly aware of whose will we are following. I believe that Judas designed his actions, not God (or this was God’s plan). I do know that when we leave God out of our actions there are sometimes disastrous results.
We must remember to listen to the Holy Spirit, to pray that our leaders and all people have open minds and hearts to hear the voice and directives of the Holy Spirit, and to have the courage to follow those directives, so that God’s will can be done on earth through us.
Prayer: Lord God, we know you love us with perfect love and you know how weak we are so we have to continually ask and pray for the strength and the courage to follow your directives in all we say and do, that your will be done here on earth. We pray for ALL people to follow your will for your will to reign on earth. We pray as we are taught in Jesus’ name.
